Exclusive: Shock Chelsea interest in Man Utd star thwarted with contract talks ‘well underway’ after Ten Hag verdict

An ambitious Chelsea move for Luke Shaw will not be happening as contract talks between the defender and Manchester United are well underway, TEAMtalk understands.

Shaw’s future at Old Trafford was far from certain when Erik ten Hag arrived as manager in the summer. Ten Hag was unsure whether the Englishman had what it takes to be his first-choice left-back over the next few years.

Tyrell Malacia joined Man Utd from Dutch club Feyenoord in July and soon began threatening Shaw’s starting spot when the season began.

However, Shaw has made huge strides in recent months, and he has proven to be one of Ten Hag’s best pieces of work in the relatively short space of time the 53-year-old has been in charge.

Shaw’s progress has been outstanding. It has been highlighted by Ten Hag using him and trusting him in central defence as well as left-back. He is arguably Man Utd’s best defender this season alongside new arrival Lisandro Martinez.

Shaw is one of four Man Utd players who had their contract extended by 12 months in December, with the club triggering options they had in each of their deals. Marcus Rashford, Fred and Diogo Dalot joined Shaw in having their contracts lengthened.

But this is not a long-term solution and Man Utd officials must get to work on sorting out multi-year deals to prevent any transfers elsewhere.

Man Utd begin contract talks with in-form ace

TEAMtalk has been told by transfer insider Graeme Bailey that talks between Shaw and Man Utd over fresh terms are well underway. Ten Hag has green lighted such discussions after being hugely impressed by Shaw’s recent form. And Man Utd could soon reach an agreement with the 27-year-old.

There have been some rumblings that Chelsea might try to capture Shaw if he enters the final 12 months of his Man Utd contract. They have previously attempted to sign him, while he is also understood to be a Blues fan.

However, Man Utd will thwart the west London outfit by tying their player down for the long run.

Meanwhile, Man Utd and Chelsea could both miss out on a Serie A star to Leicester, according to reports.
