Frenship’s Hunter Welch, Lubbock-Cooper Liberty boys claim region golf titles

Frenship’s Hunter Welch claimed the individual championship to close out the Region I-6A boys golf tournament Tuesday at Prosper.

Welch shot a 137 for the two-day tournament, finishing two shots ahead of Dallas Highland Park’s Brooks Simmons, who finished second.

Welch will return to the state tournament after an appearance with Frenship’s team in 2022. The 6A tournament will be April 29-30 at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.

Region I-3A

Lubbock-Cooper Liberty Blue had the top two individual finishers to help the Patriots secure the team title in the Region I-3A golf tournament at Abilene.

Reed Blacklock was the individual winner with a two-day score of 142. Teammate Jackson Ballou finished three shots behind at 145 to come in second for Liberty, which had two teams competing. The Red team finished seventh.

Other Liberty Blue members heading to state include Jackson Tyler, Cole Barr and Lane Lewis.

Shallowater’s Bryson Clark also secured a spot at state, shooting a 146 to finish fourth. He tied with two Brock golfers but dropped a spot in the play-off hole.

The Class 3A state tournament will be held at Grey Rock Golf Club.

Region I-5A

Lubbock-Cooper’s Kyler Ezell is headed to state after finishing fourth in the Region I-5A boys golf tournament Tuesday.

Ezell shot a 150 for the tournament and was the highest finisher among individuals who didn’t qualify for state with their team. Lubbock-Cooper shot 648 for the tournament to finish seventh.

The Class 5A state tournament will be held at Legacy Hills Golf Club.

Region I-2A

New Home tied for first in the Region I-2A boys golf tournament, but had to settle as the runner-up after falling to Sonora in the sudden death play-off.

Sonora and New Home each shot 650 for the tournament to force the play-off. Sundown claimed the third spot in the team standings. All three teams are headed to the Class 2A state tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course.

Isaiah Igo of Sundown claimed the individual title, shooting a 144 for the tournament. New Home’s Owen Morris tied for fourth at 150 while teammate Zach Armes came in ninth at 154. Farwell’s Cooper Nichols also tied for fourth to claim a state-tournament spot.

Joining Morris and Armes at state for New Home will be Eli Boynton, Graham Keys, Rogan Haislip and Dane Armes.

Post’s Carter Petty shot a 151 and will be the second alternate for state.
